Boulder County and Central Federal Lands to present plans for roadway and creek project
Boulder County, Colo. — Boulder County Transportation and Central Federal Lands (CFL – a division of the Federal Highway Administration) will present current designs, answer questions, and listen to feedback on plans for reconstruction of Lefthand Canyon Drive and recovery of adjacent sections of Left Hand Creek at a public meeting from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14, at Altona Grange, 9386 N. 39th St., Longmont.

CFL and Boulder County are collaborating on the design and reconstruction of permanent repairs to Lefthand Canyon Drive and creek improvements in areas adjacent to the areas where road reconstruction will be occurring. Construction is planned to begin this October and last until next fall 2016.

“By partnering with Central Federal Lands, we were presented with an opportunity to improve the design and accelerate the construction schedule in Lefthand Canyon,” said Boulder County Transportation Director George Gerstle. “CFL is equipped and well skilled to handle projects of this magnitude and together we can build a road that is more resilient against future extreme weather events and make it safer for everyone who uses the road. The project includes not only reconstruction of the damaged road sections, but also better shoulders to improve safety for everyone who uses the canyon, four new bridges where the road crosses the creek and restoration of the Lefthand Creek in areas adjacent to the road, all of which will be a vast improvement for the ecological health of the whole watershed. This is a huge opportunity and we need to make sure it is done right. We’re moving quickly, so now is the time to provide feedback.”

Construction designs, travel impacts during construction and related information will be provided on the project website and through a project email listserv. You can register for the listserv on the project website.

County wants to hear from Cyclists about Fourmile Canyon Rebuild

County wants to hear from Cyclists about Fourmile Canyon Rebuild

TO3_OverviewMapzoomFourmile Canyon Dr west of Boulder was heavily damaged during the September 2013 flood.  Prior to the flood, this road, while heavily travelled by cyclists, had no shoulders.  As part of the permanent repairs to the road, Boulder County is considering adding an uphill shoulder in two contiguous segments (see overview map) where they will be repairing the road from flood damage.

To date, Boulder County has heard feedback from residents regarding the proposed shoulders, but has not heard from the cycling community.  If cyclists support adding shoulders to these sections of Fourmile Canyon Dr, it is imperative to speak up at the next public meeting or email transportation@bouldercounty.org .
